Review of Kissing Jessica Stein (2002) by Lisa E — 06 Feb 2008
This is funny, smart and surprisingly moving at times. The sexual politics are refreshing although this is less a film about being gay and more about meeting someone who is a catalyst for change in your life.
The dialogue is fast and self conscious. The characters are engaging although Jessica herself is intially neurotic to the point of offputting. Its hard to see why Helen perseveres! The ending does confound expectations of what the filmakers are trying to do.
Jessica winds up in pretty much the same place, romantically, that she started but she herself is changed. I got the feeling that as far as relationships go the line "I don't think there's just one person for you.
I think there's seven" was kinda the point. She has opened up, but not too much!
