This tough noir moves in fits and starts, but is propelled by a gleeful performance by James Cagney. He's a ruthless son of a bitch who drags everyone down to his level. Some good cinematography, crisp dialogue and fine supporting performances, especially Barbara Payton.

Payton has a tragic biography, rife with abusive relationships, alcoholism, and prostitution, and ending with heart failure at age 39. She was quite a dish in her heyday, though. Not the most memorable, but quite solid and enjoyable.
