Review of Kinsey (2004) by Tyler J — 28 Jan 2008

I caught "Kinsey" on TV...a nice character study that was ably supported by Lithgow and Co., enjoyed mostly for when our protagonist slipped into his father's character weaknesses without self awareness of such. The standards of the time seem laughable by today's standards, but I still remember prudish times even when I was a child in the so-called "liberated" 70s.

What we do without the groundbreakers that dare say something different than the powers would admit is true, and the self-impressed moralists seek to cover up?

The 4th entry in Lone Wolf and Cub starts out looking great, but wears down some as the disappointing climax approaches. Having said that, I loved the way he staggers off in the closing.

The series is great fun all the same.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind take the interesting premise based on memoirs and does a decent job of conveying the insanity inherent in leading the double life. I must admit I found some of the humourous bits out of place and detracting until I finished the whole and decided it was meant that way to show our "hero's" shaky faith in his own sanity.

Now to the Gold of this group...whenever I see rougebooks rave about something I can usually count on at least enjoying it. When I learned the day before I saw it that it was directed by Anderson of the great Boogie Nights fame, I was a lock to go out to see it.

Before that, I noticed some negative RT critic reviews and some fan commentary that blasted the tone and especially the ending sequences of the picture as being irrelevant and boring, and so I waited for that part to come on...and then the movie was over, and I didn't see it that way at all.

Why would a thinking person not credit the exhibition of the fruits our misanthrope's labours? The ending sequences were GREAT, and the final line "I'm finished now" SUPERLATIVE!

Without the last 20 minutes, it would have been a lesser film. If the subject matter itself is to blame in those critical minds, I can see the point, but to call those last scenes anything but crucially important to the whole would provide example of the schism I feel between myself and the general public's tastes.

To put it another way, YOU'D HAVE TO BE FUCKING CRAZY TO SAY THAT!!! Please stay away from my crappy little journal, and never recommend a film to me...your taste and mine are from different universes.

Good job, roguebooks! I had a great time at the flick!

As a brief addendum, giving this one 8 makes me realize I had a greater love for No Country For Old Men that would be on par with this film, and so I'll rescore.
