Review of Kinsey (2004) by Alejandro T — 08 Oct 2010

A biographical film that looks at the life of Alfred Kinsey, an American biologist and professor of entomology and zoology, who later on became a pioneer researcher on human sexuality and provoked controversy in the 40s and 50s. His publication "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" was one of the first empirical research report on sexual behavior, which influenced social and cultural values worldwide.

In the movie we see Alfred Kinsey (Liam Neeson) as a man with no taboos, who wants to explore and educate himself and the public regarding sexuality. Even the fact that he got married to Clara Bracken McMillen (Laura Linney) does not stop him, but in fact inspired him to begin this study in the first place. He's concentrated on his research, makes sacrifices, and despite the obstacles he's determine to provide the world with scientific knowledge. While gathering sex histories of as many individuals as possible, of any orientation, he starts forming ideas that lead to the creation of the Kinsey scale.

Performances are stunning and there is excellent chemistry between the leading couple. They can balance laughter, seriousness, and intelligence and march together during the sex research, each one in their role.

Since its a movie about sex, it has a great sense of humor, and presents sex in the most scientific way without making the audience feel shame or uncomfortable but freely to understand the severity of the matter, and realize that once upon a time people were ignorant and afraid to talk about one of the most natural drives in human life.

Watch it and you won't regret it ;).
