Review of Kinky Boots (2005) by Valerie S — 18 Nov 2010
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I love anything drag queens, which usually means you get a campy/glittery film with a few quick laughs. This was actually a semi-serious film. Don't get me wrong- it does have it's humor but it is a great balance between humor and human struggles with who we are and what we do to change things.
All the characters are very likable- even the "villain" if there were to be one (Charlie's fiancee) was a very understandable character. The emotions of everyone are conveyed very clear and not done in a campy way- even the rivalry between Lola and Don becomes amicable. And I must say, Gawain from King Arthur cleans up rather nicely- I barely recognized him as Charlie!
I would definitely watch this again and recommend it to anyone who loves not only underdog stories, but drag queens.
