Review of Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015) by Lou A — 19 Oct 2015
For fans of the action genre, this is an instant classic. Writer/director Matthew Vaughn keeps up his amazing track record, this time spoofing classic 007-style spy films, while also honoring them and giving them a modern twist.
The supporting cast is full of fine actors, including Michael Cane, Mark Strong, and Samuel L. Jackson. Taron Egerton also gives a great debuting performance, perfectly portraying the young British street-tough, with potential for greater things.
But it is Collin Firth (who had trained for months to do his own stunts in the impeccably choreographed combat scenes) who completely dominates the film. A scene that involves him and a chaotic brawl in a church, and another that may be the most edge-of-your-seat sky-diving sequence of all time, are both enough to take one's breath away.
Overall, it has an equal amount of thrillingly ultra-violent action and big laughs, making it a tremendously fun experience.
