Review of Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015) by Filippo S — 28 Dec 2015
The Moulin Rouge of spy movies. Quirky, subversive spy flick. Think James Bond as conceived by Quentin Tarantino & John Cleese. I suspect this will not appeal to anyone who doesn't understand "British humour." Very weird, but ultimately very enjoyable. Like playing the 1812 Overture over a series of upper class twits' heads (or, alternatively, the heads of the 1%-ers) exploding literally like fireworks.
Colin Firth is, as usual, outstanding. Samuel L. Jackson plays someone other than Nick Fury, which is great to see, and which I can only explain as a genetic experiment to cross-breed 1st world, new-age, political correctness with the money-grubbing, power-mongering American "business model.".
Best quote: Firth's Harry Hart, with brilliantly rendered British repression/stoicism, to a bigoted American evangelical woman: "I'm a Catholic whore, currently enjoying congress out of wedlock with my black Jewish boyfriend who works at a military abortion clinic. So, hail Satan, and have a lovely afternoon, madam.".
