Review of King of New York (1990) by Drew R — 10 Jul 2007
Christopher Walken at his most darkly compelling as the ruthless gang lord who efficiently takes over New York's crime operations, distributing profits Robin Hood-style in the process. A nastily stylish urban crime saga from Abel Ferrara.
Hardly renowned for his restraint, director Ferrara cranks out the bullets and ups the bodycount in this stylized take on the Robin Hood legend, creating a New York that is all neon and subway steam. But this is Walken's film, his electrifying, unpredictable performance as the gangster, ranging from the vicious to the vulnerable.
