Review of King of New York (1990) by Robert H — 24 Jul 2007
Underrated gangster film that has superb cast like any Scorsese gangster film. In fact, few of them have been in Scorese's film like the late Victor Argo. Unlike the nihilism of Scorsese gang films like Goodfellas, their well meaning ideals and best intentions of protagonist and antagonists. Frank White (Walken) wants use the drug money to fund a hospital for the poor. Bishop (Argo) wants justice. Gilley (Caruso) feel needs to take the law in his own hands. These ideals and best intentions clashes that results in bloody mess. Escepically, fueled by Gilley's hubris which kills his younger brother.
Despite the racial slurs. There is acceptance of interracial couples. The topic isn't made a big deal or pc scenario like Spike Lee's Jungle Fever which Wesley Snipes starred in.
Special Edition two-disc DVD is excellent. Abel Ferrara raunchy commentary is funny and insightful. Also, Schoolly-D section equally funny.
