Review of King of New York (1990) by Stephen C — 23 Jun 2009
If you thought Scorsese had a down and dirty vision of New York ,then you really should see Abel Ferrara's vision its much more gritty.
Walken is pure dynamite as the ghost faced Frank White looking to help charities by wiping out his gangland foes aided by Lawrence Fishburne as one of the most demented henchmen you have ever seen.
The cops are desperate to nail Frank and will reach down to his levels in order to do it.
Featuring two early roles for Wesley Snipes and David Caruso as the cops and Victor Argo as there boss ,the whole film is shot with Ferrara's gritty eye ,whether its a car chase and shoot out in the rain or a raid on a drugs den this film has a feel for New York bfore the big clean up by Rudy Guliani happened.
A real street classic and one which gets better with time.
