A small indie gem is my response after having seen "King Of California". Beautiful Evan Rachel Wood plays Miranda, a teen that had to grow up fast in life to support both herself and her bipolar father Charley (Michael Douglas).

Charley has just been released from a mental institution and reunites with Miranda in their house in the San Fernando Valley. Charley and Miranda will have to get to know eachother again after years apart. And Miranda soon finds out that Charley is obsessed with finding a supposedly buried treasure in the Valley. This creates all sorts of problems alongside an already rough road.

Evan Rachel Wood gives a great performance as Miranda, and it is nice to see Michael Douglas again in this sort of role that is a bit of a distance from the usual roles we see him in. I makes me think of his equally great performance in Curtis Hansons "Wonder Boys" back in 2000.

"King Of California" is a story about the difficulties in life when having lost a parent to mental illness. Still, "King Of California" does not contain of a too heavy dramatic structure. There is a right mix between humour and drama. A strong 3 is my verdict.
