Review of King of California (2007) by Hugh J — 09 Apr 2009
This movie boasts some pretty good acting but I just couldn't get into the story. I've never been a huge fan of the quirky comedy and this definitely falls into that category. Michael Douglas had a few moments that made me smile but he was nowhere near as funny as Jim Carrey at the insane asylum in 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective'.
In fact, aside from his wide-eyed expressions and complete obsession with finding the gold, he didn't really come off as that crazy. I guess that could be attributed to his time spent at the mental hospital but I was kinda hoping for something funnier.
Still, the ending was great and Evan Rachel Wood was pretty awesome, despite not really passing well for 16. I also could've done without Pepper. He didn't really add much and just seemed like a lame attempt to have someone else there besides the father and daughter.
Also, the swingers angle was more disturbing than funny. I didn't think it was necessary either. I don't know, it's definitely a decent flick, just not for me.
