Review of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) by Mary S — 21 May 2017
This movie is kind of wonderful. The opening scenes made me turn to my ocmpanion and mutter "it's going to be AWFUL." Then, the credits came on and I saw Guy Ritchie was directing and I thought, "hmm.
Let's give it a chance." I'm always getting dragged to the latest special-effects-driven junk and I either sleep through them or walk out. Please, give me some plot and character development.
Please. "King Arthur" was fun. Worth it for the sound track, if nothing else. Wonderful characters, especially Jude Law as King Vortigern and whoever plays the sharp=shooting bow and arrow guy, Goosefat Bill.
There is no history, here. It's a wicked fairy tale with big, fat underground eel-people and "Lord of the Rings"-type bad guys and let your expectations go and enjoy the ride. Guy is smart enough to insert enough character development that you actually care what happens to these people.
There is a wonderful montage of street-urchin Arthur growing up. This is the only movie in years where I enjoyed the special effects battle scenes. You will, too. Unlike, say, any of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" or the latest Star Wars wastes of time, "King Arthur" has flesh on its bones, visually and emotionally.
