Review of King Arthur (2004) by Manny C — 22 Mar 2011
Talk about straining credulity. This lavish Jerry Bruckheimer-produced take on the Arthur legend boasted that it had peeled back the truth on the tale of Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. Fat chance.
King Arthur's historical existence may still be up for dispute, but no film that has Sir Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd) ask Guinevere (Keira Knightley) whether's she's frightened of an band of marauders and has her reply with 'Don't worry, I won't let them rape you.
' can be called accurate in any way. Clive Owen is pretty cool as the legendary king Arthur, fighting hard for his ideals, and preferring, like I did, a night in bed with Guinevere, instead of her clunky words of wisdom ('What tomorrow brings we cannot know').
Director Antoine Fuqua doesn't so much direct actors as direct traffic. It's dull and inane.
