Review of King Arthur (2004) by Dann M — 08 Feb 2012
King Arthur attempts to be a historical epic, but falls short. One of the problems is that it tries to be an allegory about freedom versus tyranny that doesn't feel authentic to the period. Unfortunately the other main problem is Keira Knightley, who doesn't have the skill to pull off this version of Guinevere.
Her interactions with Arthur and his knights comes off as hostile and alienating, and her character shifts radically; from timid hostage to warrioress. However, Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, and Ray Winston work great together as Arthur and the Sarmatian Knights.
But, Stellan Skarsgard nearly steals the film with a mesmerizing performance as a ruthless, savage Saxon lord who is burning and pillaging Britain. The film also has a fantastic score by Hans Zimmer that eloquently matches the film's themes.
Despite the problems it has, King Arthur presents an interesting vision of the Arthurian legend, and holds up as a solid action film with several spectacular battle sequences.
