Review of King Arthur (2004) by Jonny B — 03 Jun 2012
A highly respectable cast in the form of Clive Owen, Kiera Knightly and co, cannot resurrect the legends told of King Arthur to a high enough standard.
King Arthur (Clive Owen) is attempting a ressurection of the British armies having been beaten at the hands of the Romans. Arthur seeks help from Merlin (Steven Dillane), Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd) and Guinevere (Kiera Knightly).
When you look at previous takes on Merlin, Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, you have been treated to some creative magic and wizardry. Yes it may have been a little far fetched but it is how I believe the medieval legends should be portrayed - seriously but creatively.
Director of King Arthur, Antoine Faqua goes for the more realistic approach; this may be more believable but the soul of the legends is lost. In the end all the movie builds up to is numerous bloody battles which may be well choreographed, but we have seen it all before.
On the brighter side, like I've already said, camera work and cinematography between battle is generally excellent whilst Clive Owen portrays Arthur more than decently. In all fairness, acting from all parties is particularly good; it's just disappointing their script was dire!
