Review of Kindergarten Cop (1990) by Ray D — 05 Sep 2009
Arnold's mugging in this film is perhaps the most awe-inspiring cinematic oddity since ZARDOZ, and there's some deft comedy based around the difficulties of working with young children, but what made the film feel flawed, to me, was the mix of comedy and action--the first part of the film is more of a cynical film, and while Ivan Reitman has fun with it, when Arnold starts to go undercover, the comedic tone shifts to a more heartwarming type of comedy that comes unglued when Arnold finally catches up with the Crisps in the film's (surprisingly) bloody climax.
One man's taste is different than anothers, and I guess the comedy/action elements probably work better for others--but they didn't gel for me in the way that they should have. Still, it's hard not to see a movie that gave us Arnold yelling 'It's Not a Tumor!!!!' as worthwhile.
Also, apparently Danny De Vito and Bill Murray were in consideration for the role.
