Review of Killing Zoe (1993) by Federico S — 28 Nov 2007
Killing Zoe is a 1994 bank heist thriller that flew way under the radar. While being overshadowed by one of his other projects, Roger Avary's Killing Zoe managed to be a very stylish and bloody violent bank heist thriller that's worth seeing more than once.
The story is very straightforward and while the character development is very quick, it's effective. Eric, the ring leader and most insane out of all of the robbers, goes from having love and respect for his friend Zed, the American, to coming within one missing shell of killing him.
When we see Eric not notify Zed of the fact that the cops are there, we get a real sense that Eric understands Zed. Zed used to be the one guy in the whole world Eric could trust. Once Zoe gets involved though, Eric loses it and attempts to kill both of them.
Clearly the ending is a little stretching it in terms of realism, although I suppose that if you have a gun pointed at you by the ring leader, you may look innocent, especially if a pretty lady vouches for you.
Killing Zoe is a fun, well written, well directed, and downright violent film and is a great alternative to the classics you have watched over and over again.
