Review of Killing Them Softly (2012) by Matt D — 31 May 2013
This movie has a great style. It's gritty, grim, and real. However, due to some mumbled performances and a strange feeling of disinterest, I couldn't really get into the whole thing because I was never quite sure what was trying to be accomplished. There's also some sort of metaphor regarding politics and economics with the killing in the background, but they never really go far enough where a coherent point can be made with that.
It looks cool, has some great death scenes, and a realistic feel virtually unseen in any other film, but ultimately I got kinda' bored by the experience because I just never really felt invested in any of it. A few more rewrites and this could have been a masterpiece, but what we're left with is a great looking piece of mediocrity. Is it worth your time? Maybe, if you're into stuff like Guy Ritchie movies you'll probably enjoy it. I don't regret seeing it, and I might see it again, but I can't help lament the missed opportunity at hand here.
