Review of Killing Them Softly (2012) by Patrick L — 24 Apr 2013
A mafia-sponsored poker game gets held up by two young idiots (Scoot McNairy & Ben Mendelsohn). An enforcer (Brad Pitt) is hired to find out what happened, track down the parties responsible, and take care of business before the criminal economy falls apart.
His methodical path is paralleled with news clips of the American economic recession of 2008. That metaphor isn't exactly subtle and this movie laces it with brutal violence, crude dialogue, and plenty of dark humor.
Killing Them Softly is mostly a by-the-numbers crime thriller, but it has a few choice moments.
