Review of Killing Them Softly (2012) by Ericka J — 18 Jul 2013
It's one of those movies where you have to watch twice. Not sure of what any of the characters are saying and the story is told in pieces. Literally the story is told as you go. There is no foreshadowing or cliche setups. In fact Brad Pitts character doesn't even show up until the quarter point of the film. Also throughout the film you'll notice clips of Presidents Barack Obama and G.W. Bush speaking. And it's difficult to understand the point of them until the end of the film where Pitts character says perhaps one of the most poignant lines in the film. There are moments filled with background noise, radio and clips that gives the film a more realistic feel. The cinematography is amazing as well. There are techniques used in the film that helps the artistry of the film. It makes watching it enjoyable considering half the time you don't understand what the characters are saying due to their mumbly low voices with heavy dialects/accents. Overall, this film should definitely be seen by those who are moviegoers and would like to see an indie film done right.
One last note: the scenes between Pitt and Gandolfini should be shown to every acting 101 class. The brilliance between these two mature actors should be studied and respected.
