Review of Killing Season (2013) by The D — 27 Jul 2013
Killing Season, or as originally titled Shrapnel, offers so much but delivers very little. For a start you already know you are going to have to get past Travolta's Bosnian accent and this isn't made any easier by his seemingly painted on beard. It would have been much simpler to lose the beard and drop the accent. The latter even had to opportunity to happen as the story wll tell you. If he'd spoken naturally it would have been much more convincing.
Set in deep in American woodlands Kovac(JT) befriends Ford(RDN) and they spend a night drinking & sharing war stories. It seems they have much in common and Kovac invites Ford along on his hunting trip the following day. From the outset of the hunt Kovac's real intentions towards Ford are made abudnantly clear and it becomes a private war between the two veterans.
Sadly it's just becomes a short tit for tat exchange between the two men. Kovac's motives aren't fully explained and therefore can't really be justified and the film has a conclusion that just leaves an empty feeling in the stomach. The few exchanges are quite brutal but they are very few. If KS had a better script and screenplay then I'm sure this could have been made into a more perilous tale of one on one combat as it had the right sort of people involved but they are severely let down by bad writing.
