Review of Killing Gunther (2017) by Wes L — 05 Jan 2018
Killing Gunther should have been Smokin' Aces meets Waiting For Huffman but is instead another lazy low-budget mocumentary where the only thing we're waiting for is Arnold. Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Gunther, the world greatest/most elusive hitman, and is shamelessly used to fuel the film's marketing campaign.
The decision to put America's favorite Austrian all over every poster, trailer, and TV spot for Killing Gunther is both smart and diabolical (not to mention annoying as f**k) since he is only in the last 20 mins of this 90 min (okay let's call it like it is) SNL skit.
Despite the occasional chuckle in the first 30, Killing Gunther never comes together or takes of because the writer/director/star SNL alum Taran Killam can't commit to a genre or vision. It doesn't matter if you are looking for a comedy or an action film, you will be disappointed, but not as disappointed as those looking for Arnold.
.. which thanks to deceptive marketing will be everyone not living under a rock. Also, as an actor and comedian, Taran Killam is the poor man's Will Forte.
