Review of Killing Bono (2011) by Elissa M — 14 Sep 2011
Comedy writing legends Dick Clement and Ian Le Frenais were surprisingly involved in this formulaic pseudo-comedy that is pretty light on laughs but does at least have one good central conceit - that the garage band set up by two brothers who knew Bono in their schooldays is probably consistently better than U2 - and yet meets with sparing success.
Changing musical fashions are well deoicted including a role for the late Pete Postlethwaite as an old queen and an underlying theme shows how musical reinvention rarely competes with lumpen predictability on the big stage. Mr. Hewson himself is shown to be something of a good egg and I have no reason to disbelieve the accuracy of this - true, the sunglassed one is annoying at times but not on the level of Saddam Hussein as some seem to place him. THis might have made for a diverting TV movie.
