Review of Killers (2010) by Rebecca M — 14 Feb 2011

This film is an action/comedy with no action, no comedy and no chemistry whatsoever between the two leads to even mention it's romantic intentions, many films have gone down the dull and formulaic route as in the last few years, it's not fun to say that, but it's the honest truth in today's film industry, some are bearable because of likable leads or because they know they're silly and they don't try and pretend otherwise, this one thinks it's awesome as hell, and what it really is is a completely lifeless and boring film.

Katherine Heigl plays this girl, Jen, who set on getting over her recent break-up, and to achieve this she does what I don't really think most women would do, which is to take a trip with both her unbearable parents, but then again if said trip was to the French Riviera like this one was maybe some wouldn't mind the 24/7 parental company. There she meets the Ashton Kutcher character, and if you've seen this film then you'll know that the desperate way in which she jumped his case and followed him to the beach would get a real-life woman no interest from a guy, unless the guy's equally desperate, and you can't really believe Ashton Kutcher would be desperate, nor can you believe it when he likes her back and asks her out.

But sure, even if that was inconceivable to me I guess it could in theory happen, but the plot gets dafter still when we find out that Mr. Kutcher's character, Spencer, is actually a hit-man who, for some reason we are never really given, doesn't want to do that anymore but would definitely love marrying this girl and moving to the suburbs with her, with a boring day job included in the regular-life package he was apparently so desperately after. It was at that point when I was fearing the horrible outcome this film was slowly but surely creeping it's way to delivering, but the optimist in me thought it could, maybe, be saved. But alas, the optimist in me was dead wrong.

Because, of course, a few years into their lives together people from Spencer's past come back for him and that's when the movie gets unbearable, and becomes seriously unfunny even though it spends every single available second trying to be hilarious, the result is a film I wouldn't recommend, not even to those who liked Heigl's last offering, The Ugly Truth, because this one is actually worse. Seriously, this film sucks, Kutcher who's usually cool to watch is horribly miscast and there is not one genuine laugh in it.
