I'm calling this sub-genre "small town goes up against monstrous threat." There are some fun movies that fall into this category: Critters, The Blob, Gremlins, Alien Vs. Predator 2. Killer Klowns succeeds with its outlandish villains.
Funny, crazy, and sometimes downright creepy. Unfortunately, the only human worth watching is John Vernon, and he doesn't have enough scenes.
