Review of Killer Joe (2012) by Nguyen Thuy H — 05 Jan 2013
Hmm, perhaps my head is not right here, but may I say that if I'm really in a taste for trailer trash, I would go to The Paperboy, so crazy and indeterminate in its own ways, instead? In painting a trashy picture of Southern Gothic, Killer Joe has, for many times, tipped off its balance.
McCoughney is brilliant, sure (nice butt, by the way), and our former Showgirl is back to haunt us, better than ever. However, Killer Joe suffered because it never seemed able to figure whether to get crazy or to get serious.
The tones are all over the place. Watching this makes me value stuff like Sucker Punch or I Saw The Devil more. It's clear that, in making a satire, you have to be very careful to make it feel real, yet unreal.
Killer Joe never even feels real at the first place.
