Review of Killer Joe (2012) by Gary N — 09 Jan 2013
A twisted take on the American Dream and a black humoured trailer trash fairy tale. McConaughey plays a crooked cop- a gun for hire-who accepts a contract on a drunken junkie mother. The "customers" are her own kin-driven by greed & no small amount of self preservation.
This is like an infusion of Norman Rockwell Americana infused with a harsh reality of Jerry Springer-like characters. That the actors can imbue a sense of humanity, dark humour and warmth to any of them is a credit to all. McConaughey has recently made some great career moves (Magic Mike, The Lincoln Lawyer) and is soon to star in Scorsese's latest. His KFC scene would have Colonel Sanders spinning in his bargain bucket!
The whole cast playing the "Smith" family are simply spot on. This is Cormac McCarthy with a dose of laughing gas ala Blue Velvet!
Some might find it too dark, but its closer to life than most would like to admit.....
