Review of Killer Joe (2012) by Paul W — 17 Jan 2013
It's nice to see Matthew McConaughey try "acting" again after about a 16 year absence. Easily his most electric role since a long time ago in a movie far, far away called A Time to Kill, and he's better and more mature in this as an actor.
I was also impressed with Thomas Haden Church; it's hard to play such a passive (and stupid) character right. I'm a big Joe R. Lansdale fan, and I know this wasn't written by him, but it feels like one of his novels coming to life.
It's a compliment to the film that it is able to keep the audience engaged for so long with such unlikable characters; not one person in the movie is likable (even Juno Temple as Dottie who's the most innocent is still just kinda weird; maybe a little slow or something, she certainly doesn't seem "all there.
").
