Review of Killer Joe (2012) by Daniel V — 06 Feb 2013
Ok, steady on now! So there's full frontal nudity! lets be adults here...I didn't really care for it as much as its dark, intelligent and probable metaphorical undertone demanded. Its an ugly, pessimistic little film with a very able cast and crew clearly pulling the strings behind it.
It hits you hard at times but kind of helps you up off the ground a few moments later and dusts you off. It has a way about it. The dog viciously barks outside the trailer of which is owned by a fairly fucked up family and this creates uneasy ambience.
Then there's the stereotypical world of trailer thrash Texas to throw in as a background setting. Freidkin is more or less presenting here the side of America he despises and then shows us what he would like to do to it.
Fair enough, it works. But it lacks an edge, which for example would have been exquisitely easy for David Lynch to add, if he had been at the helm. Just saying!
