Review of Killer Joe (2012) by Mike N — 18 Mar 2014
A crazy, bizzare, deep-fried southern gothic-y noirish black comedy. The performances of all the leads are superb, and along with 'Mud' this has cemented McConaughey as one of my favourite actors, and here he just oozes this terrifying menace.
But it's an odd one. It's in some parts simultaneously hard to take seriously, dreadfully serious and then occasionally disturbing, and I can imagine many viewers wondering what the fuck they just watched; in that mix you've got an almost entirely unsympathetic white-trash family, a chicken fetish and a sudden jarring ending.
Characters are frequently asked if they want black or white meat chicken. Well, you've just been served chicken that's about as black as it gets.
