Review of Kill Your Idols (2004) by Campbell K — 24 Oct 2008
A look into the no-wave music scene from the early 80's with mixed results. as a presentation of facts, it was fairly light on anything really tangible and focussed on a few bands from then and a few from now.
I think where kill your idols got into real trouble was when it leaned on the older artists to talk about the newer generation - like some sort of untouchable, totally impossible thing happened and could never be matched.
give me a break. it takes a really special ego to make unschooled noise on an instrument, it's expressionism and performance art. that kind of expression is still alive today in several forms of music, and while there are imitators from the same city, there are interesting things happening globally: this film chose to not look elsewhere.
I like that it represented the city universally, I just think that crary fell short of something truly "insider" with his film.
