Review of Kill Your Friends (2015) by Alistair L — 22 Nov 2015
I saw this film on the strength of the trailer, and not on any reviews - it looked cool, edgy and dark. It's all about a dislike-able young A&R (Artists & Repertoire) manager, Stephen Stelfox - he will literally do anything to get ahead in the music business, and is played dead pan, with aplomb and charm by Nicholas Hoult.
I do take issue with some of the language used by Stelfox, there's pretty much something there designed to offend just about anyone, every ism in the dictionary, but most of all cynicism - however conversely there are some real gems.
Our anti-hero's mantra is borrowed from "Conan the Barbarian"; To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women! Success is a gang-bang, failure is a lonely rapist in the bushes.
It's a big finger up at how fickle the music industry can be. It is offensive for sure, but it was also fun to watch if you can leave your sensitivities at home.
