Review of Kill Your Darlings (2013) by Matthew U — 20 Sep 2013
Director John Krokidas said at the gala launch for this film at TIFF13 that the ausdience at that event would probably be the biggest audience the film would have in one sitting and I would tend to agree.
The subject matter of this film is intriguing and Ginsberg is a legend in American literature. The combination lends itself to the expectation of something grand. Unfortunately the potential in the subject matter is not realised.
Dane DeHaan has screen presence but Daniel Radcliffe did not seem to have the range to really bring Ginsberg to the screen. This may simply be a result of the script. By playing characters such as these Radcliffe appears to be keen to quickly shake the Harry Potter image and this is never more so in his gay sex scenes.
For fans of Ginsberg and those wanting to learn more about a very interesting time in American history this film is worth a look but dont expect any revelation.
