The movie wants to show us how the Beats wanted to break out of the stifling conventions of their era, and the dark consequences that come with such a move. But the movie fails to adequately convey why those conventions were stifling in the first place, and it fails to convey why anyone would be so enamored with Lucien Carr.
It left me cold.
