Review of Kill the Irishman (2011) by Amilcar A — 09 Apr 2011
I ran away from the M's game to catch this film thinking I'd be tired from boredom. Then I get to the theater and this movie kicks ass.
Mob movies are great and when they pick a good story they are unmatched. Kill the Irishman is based on the story of real life bad-motherfucker Danny Green. What is really cool about this movie is that it's a bit outside of the "main circuit". It's not about giant Chicago-NY operations, the protagonist is Irish and the thick of the action is relatively small time.
All these points make the story great since you are not comparing all the time against the titans of mob cinema. This film really stands on it's own. Who would have thought Cleveland could be so bad ass.
The film has a relatively unknown set of actors (outside the obligatory Italian-American cameos) and that makes it particularly powerful. There are no Pacinos or DeNiros that take too much real estate and sometimes coast.
Kill the Irishman is a great surprise and should be mandatory for all aficionados of film noir and gangster movies. The soundtrack is also very strong and it plays an important role in the movie.
Excellent film. Enjoy if you can.
