Review of Kill the Irishman (2011) by Philip C — 20 Aug 2011
I just love a good gangster flick, especially when it's based on a true story, but for a few reasons this one did not feel like a gangster movie at all. I'd call it a regular biopic before calling it a gangster movie, although it had some similar elements to the genre it just did not fit the mould.
I'm not saying that every gangster movie has to fit a set criteria (that would make 'em pretty damn boring), but it just didn't give off the gansgter vibe. Despite the uncertain genre, it was a moderately entertaining film.
The acting was certainly strong, Ray Stevenson did a brilliant job as the iron-willed Danny Greene. Although I'm not familiar with the actual history behind the script, it had a very realistic feel to it.
The plot was very good for character development, but some of the conflicts were unclear at times, resulting in a slightly muddled plot. Overall it wasn't a complete waste of time, but not as impressive as it could have been with a stronger director.
