Review of Kill the Irishman (2011) by Ken G — 13 Sep 2011
Quite interesting, with a sometimes almost light hearted approach, tale of Danny Greene(Stevenson) who rose through the unions & under the wing of the Italian mafa. Based on a true story & set during the 70's it has a lot of similarity but without the character depth to Goodfellas.
Admittedly some of the 'names' appearing here, not least Kilmer, Walken & Sorvino, appear sporadically & briefly. Kilmer was most likely brought in more for his narrative skills giving the film a little hint of noir.
I'm still not sure about Stevenson being suitable lead man material however here he is not awful.
As his power grows Greene is making as many enemies as he is friends, and makining friends become enemies as his greed for power greatens.
To his advantage after 11 attempts on his life by all manner of methods he lives on(US title for this movie was Bulletproof gangster). However he does lose some things like his first marriage.
All culminating in a massive campaign of tit for tat bombings and shootings in Cleveland it almost seems to climax a little quickly with no real surprises.
I would point out you shouldn't over work Vinnie Jones, half Irish half Eastern European? The accent is predictably hilarious.
