Review of Kill the Irishman (2011) by Nick M — 25 Feb 2012

This is a movie about a mobster and a mafia war and lotâ??s of explosions. All of this would be cool if the movie wasnâ??t what I would consider one of the worst movies of 2011 in terms of just overall quality. But, what saves the movie and makes it worth watching is if you enjoy a good laugh at the expense of some actors who for some reason put on a terrible performance in a movie with an equally terrible script. At first the movie is painful, but if you stick with it, you notice how comical it all is.

Examples of moments where this movie is horribly funny (probably will make more sense if you watch the movie):

1.) The confrontation in the beginning when the guys are dying of heat exhaustion.

2.) The gibberish Greene says to coax that bodyguard into not shooting him but instead fist fighting him.

3.) When that guy shows up at Greeneâ??s office and says â??What do you think this is?!â?? pulls out an envelope from his jacket, dramatically rips it up, and then they end up talking about potatoes.

4.) The random voice over when Val Kilmerâ??s character shows up.

5.) Val Kilmer.

6.) Motorcycle Gang arrives and wife says â??We canâ??t live hereâ?¦â?? and Greene glares and says â??Itâ??ll have to do.â??

7.) Christopher Walken â??Do you like stroganoff?â??

8.) When Greene chases this little kid while laughing like â??Ah ha ha haaaa ha!â??

9.) â??Art doesnâ??t gamble.â??

10.) â??I told you not to gamble Art!â??

11.) Sumersault away from car.

12.) â??I can subpoena you!â??

13.) â??You really wanna dance with me?â??

14.) When Greene drinks a soda and looks like heâ??s in an ad for coca-cola.

15.) Greene trying to kill a sniper with his revolver after doing pushups while wearing a track suit. Why does everyone try to kill him while heâ??s working out in the park? To be a little more specific, why does everyone try to kill him while heâ??s doing push ups in the park?

15.) Golf clubâ?¦to the face.

16.) Explosion, explosion, explosion, explosion, explosion, etc.

17.) â??Weâ??re moving up!â?? Jogging dance + explosion.

18.) Pep talk to little kids â??You donâ??t wanna be just like me kidâ?¦go on, get outaâ?? here!â??

So many quality quotes came out of this movie.

The movie gets better once Greene has a mustache, I think itâ??s just psychological though.

There is a house explosion thatâ??s actually pretty cool.

Also in terms of things that are well done, the movie does have a nice sense of time. The sets and costume design are well done and put you in the moment.

Iâ??ll go ahead and say it, this movie is terribly acted, terribly written, and consistently over dramatic. But all of this together makes for a pretty decent unintentional satire on the mob movie, dramas, and biopics. Itâ??s also awesome having Christopher Walken and Vinnie Jones in the same movie, even if they are only in it for brief moments that are not necessarily interesting. The cast in general is pretty ridiculous for this movie (meaning a lot of big names), but for some reason every person in the movie seems like they are just there for the paycheck or just having fun being over the top.

Honestly, in terms of overall quality of movie, this is probably one of the worst of 2011. I really canâ??t justify any of the positive reviews it has received. The whole thing feels like one big joke. But that same feeling is what makes it decently enjoyable.

Verdict: 1/5 Stars (This is a terrible movie).

Comedic Bad Movie Rating: 4/5 Stars (Lotâ??s of hilarious moments and very enjoyable for all of the wrong reasons).

Disclaimer: I pretty much enjoy every movie I watch for one reason or another but fair warning, if you do not enjoy a movie unless it is well acted, this is not a movie you should watch. I canâ??t stress enough how awful each and every line is delivered, and on top of that how poorly written the whole thing feels.
