Review of Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004) by Dominic Martin A — 21 Oct 2013
This movie disappointed me on so many levels. Right off the bat I could tell what kind of movie this was going to be and I was not wrong in my judgement. In the first 10 minutes you could tell that this movie was going to be nothing but talking and right then even at a very meagre 10 minutes I was already getting bored. I wasn't expecting a copy and paste scenario where the same things happened from film to film but I don't think it's too outlandish to expect the same sort of thing from movie to movie. I was expecting more stylish and outrageous fight sequences and style changes, but nope. Im sure all the dialogue has a purpose but I really did not care at all. It feels like all the energy was sucked out of the movie and what we have in its place is a film that has no idea what it wants to do.
If I didn't already know that Tarantino directed both, I wouldn't have guessed that he did. This movie had such little style in it and pretty much everything that made the first movie, the first movie. The only flair he brought to this was one scene where he made the camera smaller so it looked like we were trapped with The Bride at one point and that was it. What we have in it's place is a completely pointless flashback sequence that lasts about 20 minutes to explain one point in the film, which really was not needed at all. She could have just punched her way out of that scenario without a long flashback. This movie was also too long for its own good. Clocking in at 2 hours and 15 minutes, a lot of this movie felt very filler. One scene in which Elle reads information about a snake, what was the point? Who cares? In the first part there was a scene in which Elle just walks down a hall whistling, it was pointless but it was also crazy fun and is one of the scenes I'll never forget. Was it silly? Sure, but it gave the movie it's identity.
With none of its outrageous humour, amazing visual style or even interesting characters, this movie has little to offer, unless you like hearing people drone on for hours about crap you don't care about. It's not like I don't like movies that have a lot of talking, the opposite is true, one of my favourite films is 'All The Kings Men' and that's nothing but talking, but it's just the tonal shift from movie to movie is too massive to ignore. This is not a bad movie by any means, I've seen bad movies... really bad movies and this does not rank there with them, trust me, I know what a bad movie is but I am just disappointed. All Tarantino needed to do was add another 40 minutes to the first film or ask for a re write of this one.
