Review of Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) by Haruka K — 10 May 2014
Kill Bill: Volume 1. A lot of style and not enough substance. It was a quintessential revenge movie, but had just tried too hard not to be one. While I did respect the use of actual Japanese actors and proper dialogue, it seemed unnecessary/meaningless to make O-Ren's origin story an anime (besides the fact that yes, anime is significant in japanese culture) and the directorial choices such as the black out fight scene seemed very silly to me. That is not to say it wasn't an interesting watch, but compared to Tarantino's other works such as Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs it obviously falls flat.
But Lucy Liu was a cutie.
