Review of Kids (2011) by Jaret M — 29 Dec 2014
I watched the film again yesterday. I remember when it came out in a small theater at Lincoln Center in New York.
Nothing like this was ever done before. I lived in New York in those years and I was the same age as the characters and it was like that for some kids. Critics who criticize this film they do so because they're completely unfamiliar with that reality. Two of the main "actors" committed suicide. Casper at 25 hung himself at the Bellagio and Harold -whom I met and smoked a joint with- died of overdose in a grimy apt. in Brooklyn. The award-winning series Lena "Girls" is just a polished up version with a spoilt generation of selfies.
The film does not aim at any intellectualism, it's just a raw uncompromising depiction of that fragment of time in New York for some of its youth. It is a basketball diary (the book, not the Hollywood treatment).
There is nothing to be criticized about Kids, you might not like it but it is excellent in such a raw depiction, period.
