Review of Kidnapped (2010) by Jack G — 25 May 2011
The movie that Irreversible, Funny Games, and practically every "torture porn" all were itching to be. by how it's shot is the key; the director Miguel Angel Vivas puts everything into long takes, so there are really only about 12 or 13 shots in the entire movie.
This is good, it's challenging, it forces the audience to confront how brutal this really is, so that the "it's only a movie" aspect starts to slip away (albeit there's split-screen used a couple of times, very effectively).
While the opening scene is basically a big red herring that works much less after the fact, the whole movie is full of true tension and the violence is harsh all the way through. I was glad I saw it, though I still don't have any desire to see it again.
But, if you have to see one EXTREME movie of this ilk, this is the one.
