Review of Kid Cannabis (2014) by Alex R — 25 Apr 2014
John Stockwell's Kid Cannabis is an entertaining drama with a few comedic elements about a high school dropout who made millions selling marijuana. Although this is far from a perfect film, and in fact it's really a standard drama where a guy risks everything to make a quick buck, only to lose it in the end.
We've seen this type of formula before, and it's a bit predictable. Despite this, I really like the film and thought it boasted some impressive performances as well. Overall this is a good movie, with a good story, good direction and effective performances, this is a worthwhile film to watch if you enjoy a rise and fall story.
The film doesn't cover new ground, but is a worthy viewing due to the fact that it's a little different that your standard "drug dealer film" because of the fact that the lead character deals in marijuana.
At first the film starts off a bit slow, with a fun atmosphere, but it slowly turns up, and it becomes a much darker film as it moves along. This is among John Stockwell's best films and I liked how he tackled the subject.
Even if the film is predictable, Kid Cannabis is nonetheless an entertaining ride that is aided with a good cast of talented actors that are very good on-screen. If you enjoy the genre, you might like this, like I said, it doesn't break new ground, but is a good addition to the genre and there are quite a few memorable moments.
With a fine mix of drama, a few comedic bits and thrills, Kid Cannabis is worth seeing if you have nothing else better to watch.
