Review of Kicks (2009) by Peter A — 04 Jun 2010
A prescient, coming of age tale of obsession and celebrity culture. This is the story of how two girls, determined to meet their footballing hero, go to extreme lengths and end up taking their actions too far. Kerrie Hayes is obviously a rising star and she is superb in this noir thriller as her character moves from innocence to maniacal throughout the film. Beautifully shot on a shoestring Lindy Heymann evokes an eerie and unsettling atmosphere, mostly using the Liverpool cityscapes as backdrop to the increasingly disturbing plot reflected by the use of falling light as the story develops. The script is sparse but this suits the characters and adds to the atmosphere aided by a superb soundtrack. The blunt dialogue is interspersed by some great flourishes 'Shout to the universe what you want' answer 'Lee Cassidy' or '34DD'. The weak point of the movie is towards the end during the kidnapping and is mainly due to Jamie Doyle being unable to capture and deliver any kind of emotion in response to his ordeal. There is no connection between the characters and it is here that the film drags. Things pick up again however and the ending is gorgeous.
A competant and rewarding attempt and a parable for our times.
