Review of Kick-Ass (2010) by Zachary C — 11 Jun 2013
It's very Matthew Vaugn. This is one of his signature understated, (as much so as a superhero film can be) gruesomely violent, and darkly funny films along the same lines as Layer Cake and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but from a teenager's perspective.
It is, as his films often are, subtly cynical of themselves and of the genre which they fall under, and is similarly well executed. I really didn't think that I would like this as much as I did, being possessed of a vitriolic disposition towards superhero films and films that try to be especially clever, or introspective, which this film might appear to do from the trailer.
I can assure you, however, that this is neither a typical superhero film, nor does it try to be especially clever and perhaps most shockingly, is totally carried by Nicholas Cage.
