Review of Kick-Ass (2010) by Aminul H — 10 Mar 2016
After watching Deadpool, I decided to go back to another superhero film that I have heard so much about. Kick-Ass is an odd but charming film that was born to be a cult classic.
The titular character has no powers in particular, neither the wealth of Batman or the skills of Spiderman but is driven by the day-to-day injustices he sees in his neighbourhood. Soon, our hero Kick-Ass realises that being a superhero is much harder than it looks and- finding himself in over his head- needs the help of more accomplished heroes: Big Daddy and Hit-Girl.
The film rattles along at a brilliant pace and though the violence is bloody, its more "comic-book" than being too visceral apart from one scene involving a car compactor which seemed oddly out of place in the film, but that is a minor complaint. Even Nicolas Cage comes across well in this and is at home in his role as a slightly over-the-top pastiche of Batman.
Such an odd but fun film which certainly deserves its moniker of cult classic.
