Review of Kick-Ass 2 (2013) by Gimly M — 16 Apr 2015
Kick-Ass 2 is less humorous than the first, but more intense. The crew seemed more intent on telling a story (and making money) than getting a laugh. Which (though probably not a very solid move given that it's a comedy movie) totally worked for me.
I'm by no means a fan of Jim Carrey, but I did enjoy the fact that his role in this was not a simple rehash of the 90% of characters he tends to play over and over and over. And over. And over.
I heard a great deal of negative comments coming from the SJW side of Tumblr, which was part of the reason I was initially so skeptical about it going in, but after having seen them, I've realised that their gripes were completely unfounded (which I should have known not to be surprised by). I can go into my view of these issues further if anyone would like, but for now I'll just leave it at "They're wrong. It's fine.".
Hit-Girl (once again) holds the entire thing together, without her, what's a passable film would probably fall short. She went through some developments that I had trouble accepting, but that ultimately brought another dimension to Chloe Grace-Moretz's character, rather than just leaving her as an enjoyable action hero.
52%.
