Review of Kick (2014) by Niraj V — 26 Jul 2014
I have bad news for all you Salman Khan haters...........he's gonna be kicking the sand in your face, big style, once again!!!
Yes, this is a remake of a South movie called (surprise surprise) Kick!
Yes, there is little logic in the flow, and mega plot loopholes, but hey, do we care?? N O!!!
Jacqueline Fernandes is credited as the heroine of the movie, a doctor no less(!!), is sighted occasionally, and very sensibly excuses herself from the proceedings in the last 30-40 minutes of the movie, after shaking various bits of her anatomy to a specially inserted drum sequence in the middle of a song. Do we care? Good Lord N O!!
Randeep Hooda is a cop, the best of the best, of course (nothing else ever comes out of the IPS), and he never forgets a face or a case, and cleverly manages to have a tax payers sponsored tour of Poland (and London, if you're eagle eyed enough to notice ;-) ) but even so, in true Indian cop fashion, is always a bit late to the party!! Do we care? Well, maybe a little.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the villian, his villiany only being made apparent in the second half of the second half, his laugh being modelled along the lines of some unknown Hollywood character I'm sure, and the evil look in his eyes menacing to many. Do we care? I think we care quite a bit more.
Archana Puran Singh (on screen after a long hiatus, last seen in Bol Bachchan), Sumona Chakravarti (last seen in Barfi) are impressive in their small roles (Disclosure: Both are my friends).
Saurabh Shukla is his usual self, a harried father, do we care. Not at all!!
Salman Khan does whatever he feels like, reality, logic and political correctness be damned, do we care??? B L O O D Y H E L L YESSSSSSS!!!!!!
This is one of Salman's best masala movies. Everytime he is on screen, there is a bit of magic that lights up the frame and brings it to life. He is brash, impish, naughty and he knows he can get away with it. I almost jumped up to cheer and clap (I can't whistle despite having tried doing it for the last 6 years!!!!) everytime there was an action scene, everytime he came up with a deadly dialogue etc.
The magic was there even though, shock horror, Mr Khan did not take off his shirt AT ALL in the movie, proving once again, that Salman Khan will always do something unexpected to make you sit up and notice!!!!
FInally (this review is getting a bit too long), I LOVED the part at the end where they play Saat Samunder and Salman does the steps that Divya Bharati made so popular way back in 1992, in Vishwatma (made by my very good friend and one of the best action movie directors - Rajiv Rai). There are a fair few other tributes to other actors and movies in this movie, something you will be hard pushed to find in any other star's movies.
All in all I would say that Sajid Nadiadwala has hit an almighty SIX with his directorial debut, and here's wishing him a long and successful career as a director.
Now that you've patiently read my ramblings, please rush to your closest cinema (or a bit further away in case the closest one is sold out!!!!!) and watch this movie!!!! THIS IS AN ORDER!!!!
