Review of Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain (2011) by Larry G — 18 Sep 2011
As a huge Kevin Hart fan, I was pleased with this special. I'm not sure if it was monumental enough to be a movie though. While very funny, the standup was the typical length of a television special.
Being a Kevin Hart fan did leave some disdain in me. That is only because his previous specials, as a whole, were funnier than Laugh At My Pain. They contained a larger slew of quote-worth lines. Which, to a comedian, is their life force.
Finally, the 'Reservoir Dogs' skit after the special wasn't even a hint of funny. Not only did most of Kevin's fan base not catch the Tarantino reference, but those who did still didn't find it amusing. It was a very poor decision to leave the audience with that as their final note. It's understandable why they felt the need to add to the film's length. But this was just not the way to do it.
All in all, you will laugh. You will enjoy the standup. You will not need to stay once the standup ends.
